Hi
Mary Emma Oakes was born in Swan River and wed 1868 to William Dunn
We do have some more information on our couple. Emma Mary Oakes was born in Swan River, Perth, Western Australia in 1851 as you mentioned. Her parents were Mary Ann Caroline Greenslade Palmer born in Perth on 15 Jan 1833 (to an early pioneering couple) and William Oak born in England in 1851.
The parents of Mary Ann Palmer were Robert Greenslade Palmer and Maria Teresa Foote and they migrated under an English migration scheme promising land allocation upon arrival on the ship Rockingham which arrived in WA on 14 May 1830 ĒWith his wife Maria and two children: William b1824 and James b1828. Source: The Bi-Centennial Dictionary of WA Pre-1829-1888 Vol III K-QĒ. Unfortunately for them the land promised did not eventuate causing them much hardship. Also the ship foundered and sank upon arrival, resulting in the drowning death of several passengers not far off the shore of the town Rockingham, which is located south of Perth. It seems that the town was named after the ship.
Emma Mary Oakes father William Oak(es) was a retired English Pensioner Guard who arrived in Western Australia on the ship Scindian in 1851. He had been a soldier in the 46th regiment, which was part of the Red Coats. He is listed as a Chelsea Pensioner.
He was significantly older than his wife as he was aged 37 years and she 19 years at the time of their marriage. They married on 3 March 1852 at St Georgeís church, Perth, Western Australia. He died in Perth in 28 May 1871 in West Guildford, West Australia.
We havenít found how Emma Mary Oakes and her mother Mary Ann Palmer travelled to Victoria. However her mother remarried on 24 Apr 1857 in Melbourne to Andrew Clarke and they went on to have many more children. So it seems that she had left her husband and travelled to Victoria. She is the informant on the birth certificate of a grandchild born in Victoria.
We are enjoying our ongoing search for distant cousins and details about our ancestors. Every now and then we find out something we are surprised we hadnít known or come across earlier. Iím sure you are continuing to enjoy your search too.
Best wishes, Vanessa
