James Dodd

From on Friday, 28 May, 2010
Hi Elizabeth, No, sorry, at this stage I do not know the shipping details to Adelaide of James & Caroline DODD, but it must have been during 1854 as they married in London Feb 1854 and their first child, (my Great GrandMother) Amelia Edith DODD was born 22 December 1854 at Yankalilla Sth Aust, their second child a son Parkhurst Frederick DODD, was born 21 May 1856 Adelaide Sth Aust.
Apparently my GreatGreat GrandFather James Henry DODD, initially was a merchant seaman.
My husband Neil helps me with my family History, regards from Glenys
See this web page for a photograph of Caroline who wed James Henry DODD
In answer to your question about the web page on "The Peerage. Com, etc" Yes, I have seen it and yes it is the same DODD family, but it seems to have been supplied by other descendants of James Henry & Caroline DODD, possibly by descendants of my GreatGrandMother Amelia's sister, judging by the names on the page.
If you care to travel further back regarding this family in England, perhaps you may "google" Mary Heblethwayte (or Heblethwaite) and John George PARKHURST of Catesby Abbey, Northamptonshire, they were the parents of Louisa Elizabeth PARKHURST, she married second to James Frederick DODD, their known children were Frederick William DODD and James Henry DODD both brothers' came to Australia and deceased in Victoria. obviously there is a lot more to this story, but that is it in brief form. At this stage I am not sure where the girl you mentioned "Jessie Louisa DODD" fits in, but the name Louisa makes it an interesting possible connexion.I will look around,

John Dodd

From on Saturday, 13 October 2012
HI Elizabeth I have just stumbled across your very interesting article/family tree for David and Sarah Arnold. My great Great Grandparents were also on the Startled Fawn and are a part of your family tree that you may not be aware of. John Dodd aged 28 and his wife Mary A Dodd (formerly Arnold) travelled with Mary’s family to Australia. My grandmother was always insistent that her grandparents generation ‘settled an area (somewhere) which was renamed Arnold where they built a very important bridge’.
It is also interesting to note that William Edward Chamberlain married Sarah Rebecca Spooner. – She is my grandmothers second eldest sister – so William and Sarah were second or third cousins.
John Dodd and Mary Ann Dodd children – only 2 survived to adulthood – Rebecca Sarah Dodd and a son who I cant remember was a William or John. Rebecca Sarah Dodd married Edward Mason Spooner and your Sarah Rebecca Spooner Chamberlain is their second daughter. My maternal grandmother was their 7th child. Also, one of their sons was William Arnold Spooner (died and buried in Mildura about 1945) I have concentrated on my Spooner heritage, so have never looked into the Dodd/Arnold side. It was on my list of things to do in retirement (which is at least 15 years away). Your article is very interesting. I hope my information is of interest to you. I can initially be contacted by email and would love to hear from you.

Edward Henry Dodkins

As Dodkin is a rare surmname, I checked. FF2001 (site now closed) had one family, Edward Henry Dodkins and Elizabeth Coombs, with their deaths recorded.
Henry died Tues 7 Sep 1875 and his death is reported in the Deniliquin Pastoral Times dated Saturday, September 11, 1875. His son-in-law Harry Horsnell was his undertaker!!
The Echuca Historical Society recently organised the micro-filming of the Riverine Herald from 1865 to 1965 and it contains heaps of important genealogical data, hence the following extract of Elizabeth's obituary.
Death of Another Old Resident - Yesterday morning Mrs Dodkins, who came to our town so long ago as 1865, passed quietly away into the rest that remaineth for the people of God, at the house of her youngest daughter, Mrs Gus. Satie, after an illness extending over ten weeks. She had reached nearly three score and ten. The cause of death was hydatids, which has taken off so many. She had the privilege of having most of her children, and some of her grandchildren, around her in her in her last illness, and passed very quietly away early yesterday morning. Mrs Dodkins was a native of London, and the Rev. Mr Brain, on his recent trip to the old country, visited her only living sister. She came to Australia when so many others came in 1853 by the ill-fated vessel, MADAGASCAR, which was lost on the return voyage. Her husband Mr Harry Dodkins, died in Echuca in 1875. Mrs Dodkins was a good woman, and much respected by all who knew her. She leaves three sons and two daughters to mourn her departure. The funeral takes place this afternoon.
Funeral Notice
The Friends of Mrs Elizabeth Dodkins are respectfully requested to follow her remains to her last resting place, Echuca Cemetery. The funeral will leave her daughter's residence, High street, at 3 o'clock Today.
