Henry Lazenby Costin

From on Sun, 4 Jul 2004
Hello Elizabeth
I am an Australian currently living in England. The other day, my wife and I were in Berkhamsted, and picked up a leaflet called 'Weddings and Kangaroos' about the history of the Town Hall. It mentioned Henry Costin who had emigrated to Australia sending back various animal skins to the Mechanics' Institute in Berkhamsted. It turns out that the text of that brochure is on the Web, so you and other researchers with an interest in that family might be interested to look at it: Berkhamsted
In 1867 Henry Costin, a member of the Institute who had emigrated to Australia, sent back the skins of various animals and birds which were stuffed and placed in display cases. Reluctantly the Institute committee decided it had no room for the kangaroo!
I hope this is helpful to someone.
Kind regards
(Dr) Philip Candy at Radlett, Hertfordshire

Thank you for your informative page on the Costin Family, it must have took a long time collate so much information so thank you so much, perhaps you can help me with my dilemma
Q1. Why was Ruby Rintoul Costin given the surname Costin and not Rintoull ? as she appears to be born 1884, Caroline & John were Married 1888 (four Years after Ruby was Born)
Q2. There is no records (that i have found to date) of Ruby on Elec Roll as Rintoull or Piera
Q3. I have found on Ancestry that Charles Joseph Piera Married to Ruby Rentuel & Evelyne Mary (I have found Evelyne Mary on Elec Roll) living same address as Charles 1914 & 1919 living Gippsland (Together), then 1931 separately Evelyne living at Apollo Bay, Charles at Elliott River.
Please can you help ? Kind Regards, Carolann Rintoul (Edinburgh)

From: Subject: Thomas Costin Date: Fri, 20 Jun 2003
Hi Elizabeth,
I have been looking at your Thomas Costin and the fact he came out in 1838. I have a Thomas Costin, and Maria, and they came out about 1838. The first 2 daughters you mention are also in my family tree. Mary Elizabeth, and Charlotte Ann. Thomas went to NSW, and then moved to Queensland. He had 4 children that came from England with him, and they then went on to have alot more in Queensland. What I am wondering is do we have a mix up here? Are they the same people?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Letter One

I notice on your web page a mention of Thomas Costin, 1833-1925, died at Ballarat, parents unknown. I also noticed Thomas Costin from Hertfordshire, married Martha Bailey (nee Booth) in 1878.
My great-great-great grandfather had a son, Thomas, born ca 1833, at Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire. The last documentation of Thomas that I have found to date (I have not been looking very hard as I am concentrating on other family members) is a mention in the 1851 British Census listing Thomas as "scholar" and living with his father and three of his brothers. His brother Henry (born ca 1832) came to Australia ca 1854, and his brother James (born ca 1836) and nephew Henry Lazenby Costin (born ca 1840) came to Australia in 1857. Could we have a connection?

Answer to John

Go to FirstFamilies2001 and get Costin - Mary Beaumont has entered Thomas Costin and Eliza Bourne, plus descendents down to gg children.
Does not mention Henry Lazenby Costin, who does not appear to be in the Australian index to 1888. Found him in the Indexes I copied for Costin, wed to Elizabeth Ward 1859.
Do you have a copy of their wedding certificate 1859 #2969, and does it name parents?
Do you have his death - is it
COSTIN Hy Lazenby D Costin Jno Mary Ann FOSTER 74 Krambuk 1914 #14545A
It looks like the Thomas you want is
Thomas Costin from Hertford wed 1878 #802 to Martha Bailey nee Booth 1845 - 1924 #4073 aged 79, daughter of Cath Reynolds and Isaac Booth
1. Henry Costin 1878 #6691
because Thomas and Eliza have been identified as coming from Malvern, Worcestershire
I did Costin because of the marriage to Ann Horn who used Austenbury as a name for one of the children.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I do have copies of Henry Lazenby Costin's marriage and death certificates. Both certificates give John and Mary Ann as Henry's parents, however, we have reason to believe that John was Henry's grandfather. Parish records in Hertfordshire state "Costin or Laycuby, Henry" was christened in 1840, with his parents being given as Henry Laycuby and Mary Ann Costin (second of John Costin's eight children, older sister of Thomas born ca 1833). We believe Henry and Mary Ann did not marry and to avoid or minimise a scandal, young Henry was adopted/fostered by his grandfather, John.
I agree that Thomas, born ca 1833, who married Martha Bailey (nee Booth), is looking good as being John's son. Should this prove correct, then we have records of John's three youngest children (Henry, Thomas and James) and his grandson (Henry Lazenby) all migrating to Australia.
As for Thomas' son Henry, I have a newspaper cutting relating to the dissapearance in Burma of Henry, son of "Mr Thos Costin, of Young Street, Ballarat East". The article dates to around 1918. I suspect this is the Henry, son of Thomas, mentioned on your web page.
Until the last few months, we had no idea who the Henry was. I came across the cutting through an elderly descendant of Henry Lazenby, who believed the Henry in Burma was a relative, but did not know how.
The joys, excitement (and disappointments) of family research!
John

Elizabeth
Thomas Costin, 1833 - 1925, mentioned on your web page is indeed my great-grandfather's uncle -- we now have three sons and one grandson of John and Martha Costin migrating to Victoria around the time of the gold rush. Thomas had one son, Henry, who disappeared in Burma around the time of WW I, possibly "devoured by maneaters". He was working for a mining company at the time.
If I had not noticed the entry on your web page, I would not have known of Thomas' migration to Australia, and probably not been able to draw the connection between the newpaper article of Henry's disappearance (we presumed him to be related but had no idea where or how) and our family.
Many thanks for the brief entry on your web page and the chance encounter.
John
P.S. the web and modern technology is at times frightening and at others (such as this) marvelous.

Elizabeth Thanks for the email (I had found the reference to Henry Costin sending the stuffed animals to the Mechanic's Institute late last year).
An update on the children of John Costin and Martha Foster. We have found another of their children who migrated to Victoria. The tally to date is John, Henry, Thomas and James Costin (all sons of John and Martha), and Henry Lazenby Costin (son of Mary-Ann Costin, oldest sister of John, Henry, Thomas and James).
Other than his name (Henry Laycuby), we still do not know anything about Henry Lazenby Costin's father.
John and Martha's children were born in Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire (as was Martha), John senior was born in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, but he is descendant from a Bedfordshire line (from Totternhoe, I think).
I have not started any research on the Costin descendants as yet (still chasing other ancestors).

P.S. Go back a couple more generations in the Costins, then cross over to the female line and the family name "Jane" and we have pushed the family back to 1540 in the Bedfordshire/Buckinghamshire/Hertfordshire corner

Subject: Reynolds or Rainals
Dear Elizabeth,
I read your website with interest. We obviously have a lineage connection, but some of the details are slightly different. I haven't explored this side in depth yet as I only dabble in genealogy in my spare time. My wife is related to Thomas Vessey Bailey, son of Thomas Vessey Bailey (Snr) and Martha Booth. They were married in 1863 in Ballarat. They had their first child Richard Elvin Bailey in 1864, then Thomas Vessey Bailey in 1865 (Our connection).

The information I have is that Martha Booth's parents were Isaac Booth who died at Lake Learmonth on November 14th. 1884 aged 74 years and 10 months and Catherine Elvin Rainals who died in Ballarat on March 19th. 1908 aged 94 years 3 Months & 11 days.

You have her listed as Catherine Elvin Reynolds. This is what interests me as I have been in contact with a Lady (Helen Bailey) who is connected with the first born Richard Elvin Bailey. She said that on some of her documents, he has stated his name as being Richard Elvin Reynolds Bailey and she has no idea where the "Reynolds" came into the picture.

My information is as follows:
Thomas Vessey BAILEY married Martha BOOTH on December 17th 1863
Martha BOOTH was born on 12th. July 1844 at No.1 Andrews Road & Pritchards Road. South Hackney London England.
Other marriages: Thomas COSTIN.
Martha BOOTH parents were Isaac BOOTH and Catherine Elvin RAINALS who married in London in 1840.
Catherine Elvin RAINALS was also married prior to Isaac Booth to a Thomas Ball Payne in 1833 who died on the 17th. July 1835 aged 25 years. They had a child together (maybe more) who was Mugliston Payne born March 1st. 1835 in Sleaford.
Does this information match in with yours? If so, is it Rainals or Reynolds?
Cheers Karl Smith
