Noel writes:-
I am of the opinion that Thomas Collison and Mary Hickey never married, there is no marriage references in NSW after extensive genealogical searching of the area, and the only reference to the fact is that stated on the death certificate of Betsy Collison 1st May 1855, No.5522 at Forest Creek Castlemaine, and Mary Bell was a midwife to Mary Hickey or was she?, but as I don`t have Charles, Elizabeth, or Jane`s birth Certificate, but do have Elizabeths and Janes marriage certificates where they state that Mary Bell was their mother and after seeing that Mary Hickey was living with Walter Scott Hamilton, I am more curious than ever about this tangled web of Thomas Collison and his 3 wives??? , of course this is unproven and I could be wrong and Elizabeth and Jane could be wrong, but I fail to see how two grown women could get their mothers name wrong on the wedding certificates. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
Mary Hickey is shown in the Index as mother of Betsy born and died 1855 and of Jane born 1862. Her death is recorded as Mary Hickey aged 52.
Mary Catherine Hickey and Walter Scott Hamilton recorded twin girls 1868 who died and 3 boys 1869, 1870, 1872 born at Heathcote.

The map on my Collison page, shows the location of Collison's Hut, drawn for application to build a school
This incredible map shows the proposed location of a school, near the Collison residence, drawn 8 Jan 1877, also has date 29 Sep 1876 at the bottom of the page, and preserved in the Victorian Archives. Found and copied 14 Mar 1995 despite Archives not listing it. Location VPRS 795, Box 1238. Thomas Collison and his son Charles by his first marriage, were both fathers of the children requesting a school near their homes.

The second map shows Collison's twins on a map drawn by the school Inspector 7 Dec 1898 for St Arnaud East This map was listed as drawn by the school inspector on 15 December 1882 to show where the parents of the school children lived and the best site for the new school.
The fact the Collison Hut and farm are shown on this 1882 map would seem to suggest that the family had moved to Bald Hills, St Arnaud East from Avoca Forest Rush, Logan, some time between the first petition dated August 20th 1878 and 1882 as Collison`s name is not on the 1878 petition list of children. There is about 52 families named over this period 1878-1894 with children in some cases and ages.

More from Noel From: on Wed, 25 Feb 2004 Found 1873 Inspectors sketch of School at Avoca Forest
Dear Elizabeth,
I found this map recently, which I had photocopied at Vic Archives in 1995 of Collison asking for a school to be built at Avoca Forest in 1873. You will see his name in centre of top circle. The original was very black so I have toned the sketch and have put the circles as coloured now, but names are as original and details are as shown in top left corner and north arrow etc. Before Collison moved to Avoca Forest he was at Synott`s Gold Field as shown in btm right corner of sketch. Major`s Lane School in btm left corner and there is a monument there now to Major Mitchell who passed that way on his exploration of new lands and was surprised to find the Henty`s when he arrived at Portland Bay.
The third map is made asking for a school to be built at Avoca Forest in 1873.
4816 names of Port Phillip residents in 1847, see pages CD and RS - areas covered includes Portland, Kilmore, Western Port, Grampians, Loddon ...
Also include these web pages of Port Phillip Directory 1847, showing that Thomas Dyster actually lived in Melbourne in 1847 and worked as a Sawyer and there also is a John Smith so I guess that John and Thomas worked together there. Thomas`s wife (nee Kesia Summers) died in Adelaide in 1845, so Thomas must have decided to go to Melbourne to live and work and he was at his daughter Caroline Emma Dyster`s wedding to John Smith at Melbourne in June 1852.
