Hello Elizabeth
Your site is very good, wish it had been there years ago when I started researching.
Regarding John COATES and Sarah SWIFT - you are missing their eldest daughter Ann COATS/Coates.
She was on board Amazon with her husband James GRIFFIN.  Graeme COATES’ original book thought she had died, but Graeme and I have corresponded over the years and he knows about the error and plans to address it if there is another issue.
I have recently put all my information about Ann on Wikitree.  Coates Family on Wikitree
I am very interested in making contact with any male COATES descendants from this line.  My father was a COAT and this COATES family is his mothers family.  His mother said they were both connected way back in England and I am trying to find the connection.  I have been hoping to find someone willing to do a DNA test from this side of the family.  Of course I would be willing to pay for it.  If you have any contacts I would appreciate any advice you can give.

John Coates c1800 and Sarah c1802, with their children including Anne married to James Griffin (widower with son John born c1843), came from Cambridgeshire on the Amazon arrived at Port Adelaide on 19 Feb 1852, from Plymouth 26 Nov 1851 with Captain Cook, and 286 emigrants,
Sarah Coates died 30 Aug 1857 aged 57, wife of John Coates, when they were living near Bowden, South Australia.

Hello , Thank you for your site. Full of interesting information. I can fill in some extra if you need anything.
My grandparents were Walter and Elsie (nee Coats) Young. Elsie mother was Rebecca Coats (the family changed the spelling of Coates for an unknown reason.)
In your history, you say that John Coats is buried at Moonambel. This is correct, however we were also told as children, that Rebecca and John were moving to Laen to take up land selected when he fell ill and died. Rebecca buried him in Moonambel and continued to Laen (near Donald) with all the children and took up the land.
Thank you again for your site. Maree

Thanks for your response to my query - Your suggestion that the Coats may have arrived via Adelaide proved to be correct and I now have a pretty good record of them.
Thanks
Peter
Based on shipping details and Vic Govt B,D& M records I've come up with the following info.
COATS and PRESSWOOD
John Coats, and Rebecca Presswood where both born in England. John was born in Wisbech in Cambridgeshire in 1828 to parents John Coats (farmer) and Sarah Coats (nee Swift). Rebecca was born in Clenchwarton, Norfolk in 1830 to parents John Presswood (farmer) Susan Presswood (nee Bemrose). John (22) and Rebecca married at (Kings) Lynn, Norfolk England in 1850. John and Rebecca sailed from Plymouth to South Australia on the barque Amazon on the 26/11/1851 and arrived at Port Adelaide on 19/2/1852. 17 people died on the voyage out. They travelled to Australia with John Coats' parents - John(52) - Agr labourer and Sarah (50) and their other children, Elizabeth(20), Josiah(19), Mary(17), Sarah(15), George(14), Charles(11) and Alfred(8)
NB on the passenger list Coats is spelt Coates.
I have not found any records pertaining to John Coats (elder) or his wife Sarah in Victoria. Perhaps they remained in South Australia.
John and Rebecca however travelled to Victoria and resided for a time at Campbells Creek where John worked as a Gold digger and their first set of twin daughters Rebecca and Susannah where born in September 1853, unfortunately both twins died at 3 months. Subsequently they moved to Rathscar near Avoca where they had another 9 children beginning with John (Jno Coates-SIC) in 1855, Fredrick (1857), William (1860), Alice Presswood Coats (1862)- (also at Rathscar), Married Andrew Glenn in 1882, Charles(1864), (Sarah and Mary) twins (1867) who both died in infancy Annie (1868) -Annie died at Laen aged 21 in 1889 amd Joseph(1871)- all registered at Avoca.
John Coats died 24/9/1874 aged 46 at Raglan after 22 years in Victoria and was buried at Moonambel Cemetery.
At the time of John's death in 1874, the family were residing Moonambel. By the time of her daughter Alice's marriage to Andrew Glen, in 1882, Rebecca had moved to Laen. Rebecca Coats nee Presswood died aged 75 on 5/5/1905 at North Laen after 53 years in Victoria and was buried at Donald cemetery.
Josiah - John's brother who also came out on the AMAZON appears to have married a Sarah Ellen Bemrose Kent in Australia and initially moved to Amherst and where they had a son John in 1854. All their subsequent children are registered at Avoca. A Sarah E Kent is listed as an 18 yo passenger on the AMAZON voyage that also brought out the Coats family. As Bemrose was Rebecca's mother's maiden name so possibly Sarah and Rebecca were cousins.

Elizabeth, I have claimed Charles Henry Coates as one of my paternal G-grandfathers.
My Charles Henry Coates born 30.08.1840 at Murrow/Wisbech St Mary Cambridgeshire, England, came out on the Amazon 1852 with parents John and Sarah and was on of 11 other family and extended family members – the same family as was on the web site I got your contact details from.
Charles was one of the few Coates not to go to Victoria. He died at Port Pirie SA in 1878. In your website there were no entries for his descendants.
Are you aware of Graeme Coates book, History of the Coates Family 1755-1987? He published it for a family reunion of the descendants of John and Sarah Coates held at the Natte Yallock riverside reserve March 1987. There are some errors, but sets out the family pretty well.
Oddly enough Josiah Coates (the immigrant) came into contact with another side of my family and was executor of two wills at Natte Yallock for William Power and his son William. Josiah’s daughter Ellen was witness to the marriage at Avoca 1877 of my maternal G-grandparents John Moore and Sarah Power, the daughter of William Power.
I have only traced the children of the original immigrants and stopped as they are far removed from my current family. I think I have got most of the migrant Coates family and the first generation Australians. I am now more interest in the family history of my direct ancestors and their siblings. To go further is exhaustive and, for my interest, too remote from me.
