Ching and Walter families of Morwenstow and Bradworthy
Hi Elizabeth,
This evening I was attempting to find more information on My Great Great Grandmother Charlotte Walter 1838 - 1868 who married William Ching Short of Bradworthy and I came across your web site. It was wonderful to see the family of Charlotte Walter listed and to realize that my ancestor Mary Ching Mar. 22 1817 who married Richard Short 1809 - 1884, was the daughter of William Ching 1795 - 1866 and Ann Cottle 1794 - 1874 and thus a sister of your ancestor John Cottle Ching who married Charlotte Walter and migrated to Australia.
In all my research of the family in Canada and the United States, it is amazing how they used over and over the same family names. Thank you for posting the info that you have. I am always thrilled to find more about the family. I have listing of Ching ancestors to 1545 if you are interested. My info noted that a John Cottle Ching and Charlotte Walter migrated to Victoria, Australia. Your site fleshes out the story! I will add the information to my family history.
A relative of sorts in Canada, Brenda Short Potts

William Ching 1821

Dear Elizabeth,
Not directly relevant to your project perhaps, but some more "colour" on the Ching side....
I have an old exercise book of William Ching's, so know something of his history - struggling Devon farmer, then struggling London policeman, then migrated to Australia with wife Betsy and their only child Elizabeth Ann. I don't know on what ship.
After arriving in Australia William Ching worked at Clark's sawmill in the then Bullarook forest, where in 1859 he received a blow from an axe and later got involved in a drunken brawl. He was so ill the next morning that his boss Mr Clark put him on a dray to be taken in to the Ballarat hospital, where he died a few days later of what the coroner called a "hectic fever" caused by the axe wound and made worse by his excessive consumption of "ardent spirits". So ended the male line of Chings which went back unbroken to Rogerus and Joellis Ching in the 1550s. His widow, who had been sickly before they came to Australia, remarried and lived for 25 more years.
I also have an old handbill of the Champion of the Seas ship, circa 1855, so suspect it was handed down in the family from William Grigg who its seems migrated to Australia on it. I could email a copy to you if you are interested.
I am a descendant of this couple (your no. 7, Ruth Marian Grigg, was my grandmother). I think in fact that William Grigg and Elizabeth Ann Ching came separately to Australia in the 1850s and were married in Ballarat in 1862.
You can see related material in the family tree at: this page by Greenthumbs is very good, used to add Anne's and Ruth's details.
