Hi Elizabeth,
My youngest son gave me the Jan Bassett book "As We Wave you Goodbye: Australian Women and War" for Christmas, and I have just got up to the poem by Martha Coxhead. I was actually more interested in the introduction on Martha which mentioned that she had also written "The Haunted Castle at Maribyrnong". The introduction also mentioned that Martha's book of poems "Lost a continent", included a photo of the castle. We're not actually short of photos of the 'haunted castle' at the Essendon Historical Society, but I am intrigued to know what Martha wrote in the poem. (Not to mention whether she wrote on other local topics).
I see that the State Library of Victoria has a copy of Martha's book, so I shall order it down the next time I am in town. I don't know whether you've ever seen (or even heard of ) her book, but I see also that it was illustrated with a portrait, of Martha, I presume.
I see from your webpage that the Coxheads lived in Footscray - I was rather hoping they'd be closer to Essendon, so I could include Martha in my bibliography of local Essendon writers, but I shall have to give her up to the Footscray Historical Society. :-)
It is quite a remarkable thing for women to have got their poems published (well, probably men had problems as well), and it would be interesting to know how she managed it. Another writer I have been looking at, Tilly Aston, published hers by getting her friends and relations to subscribe to pay for the printing. I wonder whether Martha did it as a fundraising venture to assist the war effort, or whether she just had the bit between her teeth to see her own works in print? 168 pages is a pretty fair effort!
Best wishes from , on Sat, 28 Dec 2002

Dear Elizabeth,
Thankyou so much for your research on the family of Robert Craigie, of Victoria Pioneer families.
His Brother Andrew Craigie my great great great grandfather and his wife came to Tasmania and his Robert's other brother Francis Craigie and his wife Emma Berthoud went to Western Australia.
Is there any photos of Robert you know of?
Is there any one who descends from Robert that I could contact. I know this is a longshot.
I am so grateful for your research as it has filled in the gaps, about Robert's family. Thankyou so much.
Regards, Kim O'Brien (Mr.)
Kim - would you like to add Andrew and his family up to 1900, in this space?
