Jane Copeland

From on Tuesday, 2 July 2013
Dear Elizabeth I am writing to thank you for the information I found when I googled 'Jabez Arthur Jennings" and particularly his son, Frederick John's marriage to Mary Jane Graham in 1894. (alerted by an email from a Donald Jennings in Queensland who is descended from Samuel Jennings immigrated to S Australia 1850) This may fill in a gap in my family tree as it would appear that Mary Jane was the daughter of Jane Copeland and William Graham.
I find we have been in touch before (April/May 2011) about my great grandfather's brother, Rev Thomas Copeland and his son Ernest William's restored gravestone in Cheltenham Cemetery Vic. Jane Copeland was Thomas' older sister (b 1829 Cumberland) She married William Graham in 1854 Wetheral Parish Church Cumberland. Thereafter I have been unable to trace them. I found a likely Jane and William emigrating to Canada but now it appears they may have ended up in Australia.
Thanks again. Meg Gain

Thanks so much for the Shipping links...this is filling in one of those irritating gaps in the family tree. The Graham family seem to have left Liverpool for New York (en route for Ontario?) on board 'The Margaret Tyson" 15 sept 1857. It would seem that the children of William Graham b ca 1827 in Cumberland and his wife Jane Copeland b 1829 Cumberland were all born in Canada. Then they decided to move to Australia in 1886. Of course, as well as James Graham, the eldest child being there, Jane's younger brother Reverend Thomas Copeland (1840-1926) would have also been living in Victoria at that time.
Thank you again for your sterling work. Regards and best wishes Meg

I can not find the death of Jane Graham nee Copland, did find two sons, brothers of Mary Jane, both born in Canada. This appears to be the arrival in Melbourne of the family, on the Garonne, in Jan 1886, coming to join their son James.

Dear Elizabeth -
The Friends of Cheltenham and Regional Cemeteries Inc. is a not-for-profit community group formed in May 2007 to promote the conservation and appreciation of the Cheltenham and Regional Cemeteries as places of local, state and national importance. Our motto is research, restore, remember.
We are keen to make contact with descendants of Thomas Copeland and Mary Jane Young, specifically the family of Ernest William Copeland (1868-1947).
Ernest Copeland is buried at the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery (Charman Road) and we are initiating a project to restore his grave with the financial backing of the Collingwood Football Club.
From The Argus, Saturday 30 June 1923,
Ernest Copeland who is in Adelaide with the Victorian team, has a record which is unbeaten in Australia. He has been secretary of Collingwood since its foundation, and has been delegate on the Victorian League during the whole of that period - 29 years. The Collingwood committee has been always famous for its hospitality to visiting teams to Melbourne. Mr Copeland tells me that our league room is the best he has seen in Australia, and he is anxious to see his league have its own rooms.
A photo and obituary can be found at Argus 22 March 1947, page 10, lower right corner.

John Corbett

From on Sun, 11 Mar 2007
Hi Elizabeth
Strangely enough I have another AUS James Martin Corbet born 1875 at Carngham, VIC. - John Corbet wed 1862 #1120 to Mary Mullin and their 8th child of 12 children, was named James Martin Corbet.
I have some Corbetts who lived at Geelong during the mid 19th century. Do you have any more details? One John and Sarah sailed on the 'Alan Kerr' from Greenock, Scotland on 10 August 1841 and arrived in Port Philip (Geelong) on 30 Nov 1841 after a journey of 112 days. Elaine Chalmers is researching this family.
Another earlier John Corbett (who married a Sarah) was transported in about 1831. You are probably aware of both these men. Best wishes, Jean
(Jean C Noble, The Corbett One Name Study, Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear, UK)

John Corbett and Sarah came c1843 and lived in Geelong, Agnes was baptised at the Presbyterian church, Andrew and Elizabeth at the Anglican Christ Church - this picture was found at the National Library site. The church was erected AD 1847, with Minister Revd. E. Collins in charge. The illustration was drawn by R. Meredith, and engraved by Thos. Ham. Contact the Geelong Historical Records Centre, P.O. Box 104 Geelong, they have the full set of marriages and baptisms for Christ Church.
