John Cawood

From Apollo Bay The first settler was John Cawood. Cawood arrived to work at a timber mill in 1856. In 1859 John Cawood became an "electrician" on the Cape Otway telegraph line and was responsible for the maintenance of the line between Cape Otway and the Cumberland River. In 1864 he purchased 20 acres of clear land and fattened cattle. John Cawood was one of only 60 people in the district selected to vote on the Federation of Australia.
From Ocean Rd - It would be fair to say that the Anglican church in Apollo Bay had its beginnings in 1854 when John Cawood emigrated from Yorkshire. He established Milford House as a home for his family, visitors to the area and the crews and passengers of vessels shipwrecked along the "Shipwreck Coast" John Cawood was a devout Christian and the first church services were held at Milford House by visiting clergymen from the Melbourne Diocese before the Ballarat Diocese was formed. Later, as other large families took up additional farms and the township population grew, the services were moved to the Mechanics Institute. With time, it was felt that The Bay should have its own Church of England presence and generous subscriptions were made by John Cawood and other families which led to the building of St Aidan's. The present day Blackwood altar, lectern and credence table were made from timber felled on John's property.
