Subject: I'm from the OTHER Calf family that emigrated to Oz and the USA
Hello Elizabeth -
I found your Pioneers site through Google today and was delighted to see it. We from the John Calf family knew that another part of the family had emigrated to Australia even before ours (which arrived ca. 1853) but we didn't know the details. I suppose 1853 is too late to be pioneers?!?
This is how our Calfs are related:
all the Calfs in Australia are apparently descended from:
William Calf = Frances Breach
Here they branch - the pioneer family is descended from Wm & Frances's son William, and the other Australian/American family from their son John.
the pioneers
William Calf b 1747 =Frances Breach
William Calf b 1778 =Sarah Batty (I believe - it cannot be Sarah Ann Sophia Cole, who was his grandson's wife)
Frederick Calf b 1810 = Susannah Golden
Frederick Calf b 1849 Australia = Sarah Ann Sophia Cole (and other children of Frdk b 1810)
the other Australian Calfs who arrived in the 1850s:
William Calf b. 1747=Frances Breach
John Calf b. 1790 = (1) Ann Frances Holmes (this John emigrated to Australia ca 1853 with 3rd wife Maria Smith)
John Calf b. 1816 = Elizabeth Wilson (sailor, also emigrated to Australia around the same time)
Edwin John Calf b 1858 Windeyer NSW (and six other children of John b 1816)
many Australian descendants including Brad Chappell who is working on the genealogy
ALSO in Australia: at least one other Calf, child of the above John Calf by his second wife Mary Ann Courtenay:
William Calf b. 1747=Frances Breach
John Calf b. 1790 = (2) Mary Ann Courtenay
Catherine Calf b. 1836 = Alfred 'Frederick' Stone married 1863 Geelong, Victoria at least 4 children [POSSIBLY Catherine's brother William Calf also emigrated although we can't find any trace of him]
the American Calfs (my branch)
William Calf b. 1747=Frances Breach
John Calf b. 1790 = (2) Mary Ann Courtenay
Robert Frederick Courtenay Calf b. 1829 London = Eliza Deacon b 1829 London - they dropped the Calf name and emigrated to the U.S. in 1855-56
Frederick Henry Courtenay b. 1851 Southampton Eng, & sister Laura Frances Courtenay b. 1853 Ireland, plus 3 other children who didn't have issue.
Many American descendants including me
Calfs who stayed in England
William Calf b. 1747= Frances Breach
John Calf b. 1790 = (2) Mary Ann Courtenay
Elizabeth Fanny Courtenay Calf b. ca 1831 London = Edward Henry Glanvill
Edward William Courtenay Glanville b. 1851 m. Eliza Dunn
5 children and many descendants who are probably (!) still in England
If this is not interesting to you, perhaps you could pass it along to someone in the Bainbridge family?
Thank you
Karen in Massachusetts

Hi Elizabeth
I note that you have included information from Karen from Massachucetts on your web site. I came to know Karen during 2011 when researching my great-great-great-grandmother Ann Calf. For some years I only knew that Ann Calf was the wife of William Macdonald, a hairdresser from Marylebone, London and the mother of William John Cornelius Macdonald. Their marriage was on 25 July 1814 in St Marylebone Church Westminster, London, England.
Thanks to the inclusion of the London Metropolitan Archive records on Ancestry a great deal more has come to light about Ann Calf. She too is a daughter of William Calf and Frances Breach born 23 Sep 1795 and baptised at St Mary, Acton Middlesex; the penultimate child in the family.
The interesting thing about her is the close similarities to her brother John Calf from whom Karen is descended. Both married three times and both travelled first to New York with their second spouses, returned to England and then went out to Australia with their third spouses. Ann had eight children from her first marriage to William Macdonald of which six survived past infancy. These were
font1. William John Cornelius Macdonald 1815-1849
font2. Sophia Ann Macdonald 1817-1866
font3. Charles Daniel Macdonald 819-1889
font4. Catherine Louisa Macdonald 1823-1891
font5. Henry Macdonald 1826-
font6. Frances Elizabeth Lydia Macdonald 1828-
font7. Albert Edward Macdonald 1830-1831
font8. Robert George Macdonald 1832-1833
Her second marriage to Abraham Lockwood was on 28 July 1834 at St Botolph without Bishopsgate, London and she went on to have three more children:
font9. Lydia Ann Lockwood 1835-1875
font10. Emma Lockwood 1838-1842
font11. Ann Lockwood 1841-
In June 1842 Ann and Abraham, two of their children and two of Ann's by her previous marriage emigrated to New York, USA on the ship Mediator. Her brother John Calf was already in New York. However, Abraham died the following year and Ann returned to England where she married for a third time to Joseph Shipley, a man 21 years her junior. From that time on she shaved about 5 years off her age!
In 1854 this couple went out to Australia living first in Adelaide, South Australia and finally in Geelong, Victoia where Ann died on 25th May 1859 probably in the home of her niece Catherine (Calf) Stone (the daughter of her brother John). From newspaper articles concerning a dispute over the will of her brother it seems that they had gone out to Australia either with him of just afterwards. Joseph Shipley gave evidence at the hearing and it is all documented on the Trove website.
Although, unlike her brother she did not leave any family in either America or Australia, her close relationship with her brother John makes her worthy of mention. Children of Ann's second husband Abraham Lockwood were pioneer families with three of the Lockwood sons settling in Australia from which large dynasties have followed.
I don't know if any of this is of interest to you but perhaps you would pass it on to anyone who might be interested if that is appropriate.
Regards, Carol Smith, Derby, UK
Ann Shipley died 1859 #4144 aged 59, dau of William Calf
