From on Thursday 12 Aug 2010
I am the daughter of Eric John Britten, son of Charles Henry Britten (1874 - 1943).
Over the past couple of years I have made spasmodic efforts to trace the Britten side of my family without a great deal of success. Recently I came across the John & Elizabeth Britten family tree on the internet. Once again I was met with confusion because all the information listed there on who I thought to be my grandfather fitted perfectly with my records, except that ‘my’ Charles Henry married Beatrice Anderson in 1899 – not Agnes Treble in 1906 – and all the children listed were not the names of my father and my aunts and uncles! So I determined that somewhere along the way I was missing something.
It hasn’t helped that although my grandfather’s birth and death certificates identify him as Charles Henry Britten, he thought himself to be Charles Carey Britten and signed his name thus all his life – confusing?
Eventually I think I have figured it out. There are two Charles Henry Brittens – one is my grandfather, Charles Henry Britten (1874 to 1943), son of Jonathan Britten and the other is Charles Henry Britten (1882 to ?), son of Henry Britten.
During my investigations I came across the WW1 service record (dated 27 April 1916) for a Charles Henry Britten which states that he was 33 years & 6 months at that date and that his wife was Agnes Britten. If this Charles was 33 in 1916 he couldn’t have been my grandfather because in 1916 mine would have been 42 years old.
I did a bit more digging and discovered that the Charles Henry details listed in 4.5 of the family tree should actually be attributed to Charles Henry Britten 1882, the son of Henry Britten – 10th child of John & Elizabeth Britten.
I hope this doesn’t mess things up for you and the rest of the family who have put so much effort into the Britten family tree. If someone proposed such a thing to me after all the work I’d put in – I think I would quietly want to strangle them!
Maybe some of the confusion could have been avoided if our ancestors had been a bit more adventurous with names – a few less Johns, Charles, Henrys, etc. It hasn’t helped that my grandfather’s marriage certificate identifies him as Chas. Carey Britten and the other Charles Henry’s marriage certificate identifies him with the abbreviation Chas. Hy Britten. I often wondered how people managed before computers – now I know – they didn’t!
Please feel free to contact me if you want to set me straight or need further details.
Regards, Jan.

I am delighted that you wrote
There is a War Service record for Charles Henry Britten, who wed Agnes, and on 25 April 1916 was aged 33 years and 6 months. He was gassed 7 Sep 1918 at Rouen in France, Returned to Australia on the Aeneas as an Invalid, was Disembarked 5 Feb 1919.
This means he was born 1882, so appears to be Charles Henry Britten born 1882 #22422 born at Dunolly, son of Annie Milton and Henry Britten
Henry Britten 1856 #5892 son of Elizabeth Crowe and John Britten, born at Tarengower, wed 1879 #4503 to Annie Maria Melton 1854 #5027 dau of Maria Robbins and Abraham Melton born at Fore (possibly Forest Creek Diggings) and after 1863 lived at Dunolly
Thankyou for sorting me out
See the revised entry for Charles Henry Britten, further down this page. I had him 'married' to the wrong wife!

Sent a Report that includes precise dates, which I have added to the notes.

History: Eucalyptus Distillery 1920s. The Britten family began distilling at Goldsborough in the 1920s. In 1929 their Cornish boiler exploded killing one of the family [John William Britten]. The distillery continued under H. Britten into the 1950s. It is still run as a small distillery by Pat Martin. The boiler, vat and drains stand in a clearing in the centre of what is left of the town of Goldsborough. The site now consists of a galvanised iron distillery building, containing a boiler and brick chimney stack. South of the building are a wooden crane and several concrete-covered vats (the site is on private land). According to McConville (1987) the plant commenced operation in the 1920s. According to the current owner, this distillery commenced operating in 1916.

yes, I do have a copy of my grandparents’ wedding certificate which records that at St Andrews Church, Bendigo on 11 April 1899 Charles Carey Britten (birthplace, Victoria) married Beatrice Anderson (birthplace, Korong Vale). Charles was 24 and Beatrice was 21 years old. Charles’ father is listed as John William Britten and his mother – Fanny Britten (Ms) King. Beatrice’s father was Alexander Anderson and her mother was Maria Jane Anderson – her maiden name was not added to the document.
I also have a certified copy of my father’s birth certificate (Eric John Britten 1907 – 1984) which records his parents as being Charles Carey Britten 33 years, born in Goldsborough , Victoria and Beatrice Anderson 30 years, born in Korong Vale, Victoria. The certificate says that they were married in Bendigo , Victoria on 10 April 1899. (I guess the one day discrepancy in the date of marriage could have something to do with the confusion in attending the birth registration with a baby and 4 other children aged from 2 to 8 years old as indicated on the paperwork!)
My grandfather’s birth certificate shows that he was registered at birth as Charles Henry Britten (1874) – father John Britten and mother Frances King – birthplace Dunolly, Victoria. His Summary of Death Record is also in the name of Charles Henry Britten – died 18 January 1943 at West Perth , Western Australia aged 68 years. In all other records that I have available to me he has used the name Charles Carey Britten. It is my understanding that although he was registered as Charles Henry, all his life he thought his name to be Charles Carey and even named his oldest son after himself, i.e. Charles Carey Britten (1899 – 1947) who was married to Edith Florence Hawkins.
Thankyou for these details
Beatrice Abderson was registered 1878 #4182, 5th daughter (with one older brother Alexander) of Maria Jane Bethel and Alexander Anderson, at Mt Korong. Alexander Anderson from Glasgow, wed 1867 #724 to Maria Jane Bethel from Ireland - I can not easily match a shipping arrival for Maria. Alexander Anderson died at Korong Valley, 1835 - 1883 #8674 aged 48, son of Mary Sanderson and George Anderson.

Charles Henry Britten (Aka Charles Carey Britten) 1874 Goldsborough, Dunolly , Victoria , died 18 January 1943 in West Perth , Western Australia, son of Jonathan William Britten and Elizabeth Dwyer .
