John Billman

From the FirstFamilies2001 page by Shirley Evelyn Williamson on the 31 March, 2001.
John Billman, 20 Dec 1820 - 2 Jan 1898 aged 78, born at Calticote, Norfolk, UK, wed Lydia Payne 28 Oct 1820 - 20 Jul 1892 aged 72, born at Mundford, Norfolk, UK and both died at Mandurang, Vic, Australia. John and Lydia Billman with five children, James, Hosannah, Robert, William & John, aged 1 to 9 years, left their English homeland in the April on the Duke of Portland and arrived in Melbourne in 23 August 1850. Listed as Intermediate passengers, Mr and Mrs Bilman and family, in The Argus (Melbourne) 24 Aug 1850. The passenger list end with 'and 23 distressed needlewomen.'
In 1852 John's sister Sarah Ann Billman with her husband William Bennett and family arrived in Geelong on the ship 'Success'. They had wed Oct-Dec 1842 at Swaffham.
While John was an unassisted emigrant Sarah and her husband were indented to John Winters at MtBuninyong, Ballarat. Maybe they started to travel together but in 1853 John and family were in Eaglehawk where Lydia gave birth to my Great grandfather, Henry Fothergill Billman. Shortly after it is recorded that they set up their tents under the gum trees on Sheepwash Creek, 5 mile from Bendigo on the site where the Bible Christian Church was built just 10 years later. This spot has been proved to be the geographical centre of Victoria. Some 15 months later John purchased 15 acres of land which he worked for the next 6 years. Another daughter Lydia Elizabeth was born in 1855, Peter born in 1857 and John Augustus completed their family in 1860.
He then sold this land and purchased 20 acres in a gully one mile east of the original block. In 1866 he made application for 40 acres of crown land and was finally approved in 1871. It was on this property that John planted the first vines. He ordered 1000 cuttings from Adelaide. 500 of these were planted. They were Ladies Fingers, Black Prince and Black St Peter. The other 500 vines went to his friend and planted on the Campaspe.
Heartache was common in their family as was in many of our early settlers, the six year old John drowned in Sheepwash Creek in 1855, James, now 16 was thrown from the dray and killed in 1857 and baby Peter died with dysentry in 1858. The youngest child John died with typhoid fever in 1886 aged 26yrs. My heart goes out to Hosannah, the 2nd eldest, who had her 8th birthday on board the Duke of Portland, by the time she was 16, in 1858, she was married to John Hargreaves, a man some 20 years her senior. She had given birth to nine children, two of whom predeceased her. Following the birth of her youngest child she haemorraged and eight days later died aged 32 years leaving seven children aged from 3 weeks to 15 years. She is buried in Bendigo cemetery with her baby brother Peter, and her two babies Susannah and George that predeceased her
