Henry Barr

From on Wednesday, 2 November 2011
Hello Elizabeth Just to let you kmow I came across your name on the website relating to the Barr family, in particular, Henry Barr
Henry was born 1822, the son of Henry Barr who wed 1818 to Sarah McDonald in Glasgow. Her husband died about 1822-24. She set up a boarding house where she met William Rogers about 1825.
Sarah McDonald, born 1783, wed in 1825 to William Rogers (possibly an alias). She was almost 20 years older than he. They went to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1826 on the ship, Chapman, and settled in Tasmania after he was discharged in 1829. He was a soldier/bootmaker with the Royal Staff Corps.
Both were present when Henry Barr wed 1848 to Ann Bell in Portland, Port Phillip.
Sarah Rogers died in 1871 aged 90, is buried in Digby Cemetery in Victoria, but William may have died about 1850 when he seemed to disappear off the radar, but we cannot say where he is buried. Judith has a copy of a family journal written by one of William's grand daughter's Margaretta Egan. That has given me a lot of background other than what I have researched.
Do you have any information on William Rogers after 1850 and would you like to exchange any information, such as his burial location?. Just as a matter of interest, Sarah Craig (nee McDonald) was actually the daughter of Flora McDonald who stowed aboard a ship to America during the war of independence, was found and let off in the New York east coast area. Flora had a very close liaison with a North American Indian, (Munsee Delaware) and came back to Scotland (Glasgow) about 1783 with a daughter (Sarah). Flora met and married her husband, William Craig after he returned to Scotland.
The family had a DNA test done to prove the North American Indian ancestry and Judith is 14 %.

The Chapman (558 tons) was built at Whitby in 1777, was rebuilt in 1811, sheathed in copper ca 1814 and had major repairs in 1815.
Her third voyage bringing convicts to Australia was 10 Apr 1826 - 7 Oct 1826 from London to Van Diemans Land, with master John Milbank, with 98 prisoners with JH Hughes Surgeon Superintendent, and 35 men and families of the Royal Staff Corp, including John Passmore, Daniel Saville Corporal 2nd Class, and John Ward from Hythe, Kent, who was accompanied by his wife Sarah, and children William, Elizabeth and John, with Samuel Chapman Ward born during the voyage.
The 1826 voyage of the Chapman left England with 100 convicts, 2 escaped, no deaths, 98 landed at Hobart, Van Diemans land, on 7 October 1826 following a voyage of 180 days with calls at St Jago and Rio De Janero. The Royal Staff Corps served as the armed guard on the voyage. A detachment of the Corps comprising one officer, Lieutenant Wilford, a sergeant and 19 privates left the ship in Hobart. The remainder of the contingent - 4 officers and 20 ratings, disembarked in Sydney on 4 November 1826.

Elizabeth have just found your brilliant website
The family tree that I am researching has 2 families that arrived on the David Clark in 1939 John & Elizabeth Arthur and 4 children, and John & Janet Barr. The details that you have provided are invaluable.
For your information, Grace Arthur, daughter of John & Elizabeth, married William Barr, son of John & Janet, in 1861. Congratulation on the website, and my thanks.
