Aquability located the wreck of the SS Glenelg on 28th June 2009 after several attempts. The Glenelg sank 55 miles west of Lakes Entrance, 7 miles off shore, 110 years ago on the 24th March 1900. The Glenelg set off from Lakes Entrance, east of Melbourne, on March 25, 1900 on a regular short run to Bairnsdale. From Glenelg Sank Among the 25 passengers who set off from Lakes Entrance on that bright Saturday evening in March were John Holloway Griffiths, assistant printer of the Age newspaper. His wife, Martha, and children, Ethel, 12, and Albert, four, accompanied him. Their fellow passengers included seven women and two children.
As the Glenelg steamed out to sea, the passengers were in the main saloon enjoying a singalong. Boyd describes the weather as ``not very rough". But as the night progressed, the steamer hit a squall. Seaman Alexander Lamb, who had only worked on the Glenelg for two weeks, later gave evidence at the inquest that the waves were mountainous.
At about 4am on Sunday morning, there was the sound of a crash. The iron plates under the stern had cracked under pressure and water gushed in. Captain English realised there was no hope of baling out and ordered the ship to put about to make a run for Lakes Entrance. Its position was about 40 miles west of the town, six miles off the Ninety Mile Beach. The situation deteriorated quickly. While lifeboats were being launched, the Glenelg started to break up. About 20 passengers were helped into one boat; three crew, Lamb, Thorne and Bundy the cook, climbed into the smaller boat. At about 4.30am, the Glenelg sank, her engines still running. The three crewmen watched helplessly. They could see Captain English, his chief officer and chief engineer still standing on the bridge.
