Johann and Johanna Burger

From on Monday, 21 February, 2011

Hi Elizabeth, I found on your website reference to a Hannah Crook White.
Hannah was a widow of David Burger when she died on 7 October 1856 at Williamstown, Victoria, of Phthysis. Following the death of her seafaring husband, David, prior to 1851, she migrated to Victoria, as you say, in early 1855 (eighteen months before her death). She was most likely escaping the docklands area of London with her surviving children, David Geoge Burger who was born in 1834 and Isabella Burger born 29 Dec 1846, both in the docklands areas of London.
Hannah's sister Mary Ann Jemima (White) was married to Barnard Robert Mathews who was a Lloyds Agent with an office in Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Vic, and a residence at Dover Road, Williamstown. Hannah and David Burger had at least 8 children altogether, most of them died around the age of 2 yrs. Only 2 of the children were named on Hannah's death certificate, David George Burger, age 21yrs, and Isabella Burger age 13 yrs. So I presume they were both alive at that time. Details notified by the son, David George. Nothing more is known of the daughter Isabella Burger, but David George migrated to USA before 1865, and then Canada in 1871 married and had a least 6 children there. It is not known if Isabella went with him or stayed in Victoria (if she even came, perhaps she stayed with relatives in London?) I have more of this Burger family details if you want them, however it would seem that only Isabella may have remained in Victoria. As she was only 13 years of age, when her mother died, perhaps she was looked after by her Aunt Mary Ann Jemima Mathews, but I haven't been able to find her in Victorian indexes.

Hannah Crook Burger nee White was buried in the "New Cemetery", Melbourne on 10 Oct 1856. She was born 13 July 1808 at 6 Griffon St, London, dau of George White and Martha nee Barron. George was a shipwright. Hannah was baptised 7 Aug 1808 at St Paul, Shadwell, Middlesex. She married David Burger on 27 Apr 1830 at Poplar, All Saints. David was born Shadwell Middlesex, 29 Nov 1802, son of John Burger, mariner, and Mary Fowls, and went to sea as an apprentice. He was a mate in vessels, Prince Coburg, London, 1836, Eliza, London, 1837, Catherine, Greenoch, 1837 and Hetoria, London 1839. He must have died at sea between Isabella's conception in 1846 and the 1851 Census where Hannah is shown as a widow.

I hope this clarifies Hannah's story. If you have anything further on her please let me know.

The Burger family appears (based only on the Victorian Indexes) to be Peter Burger and Hannah Crook White came about 1855.
