Subject: Daniel Backway Convict Settler
News report magistrates court 8 Oct 1834
Thomas Piper chimney sweep 1 Love Lane, Radcliffe London and a woman calling herself Julia Piper (real name Meyer) were accused and convicted of gross cruelty to a little climbing boy called Daniel Backway aged 12, Those present were astonished at his emaciated condition. Reports from several policemen, brief remarks from Backway. Backway's father a waterman had died three years previously and Backway had entered Limehouse Workhouse. He had been persuaded to leave by Piper and Meyer. He was returned to the care of the workhouse.
NB Backways father was Daniel Williams Backway waterman of Limehouse. I sent details of DWB and his ancestry to a web site I cannot now find.
19th century British Newspapers are available on line and searchable. There is quite a long account.
