Alfred Appleby

From FirstFamilies2001 page by Mechaela Hill on the 30 June, 1999. Alfred was born in London on 12 August 1833 to Charles Appleby, a carpenter. Alfred ran away to sea when he was 14 years old. It is believed he jumped ship in Australia and found his way to the goldfields of Western Australia. He later married a Miss Matthews and they had a daughter named Ada (who became Mrs Newton upon marriage).
After his first wife's death, Alfred married her sister, (Sarah Matthews), at Gambles Creek (via Geelong) on 1 May 1860. They had 12 children. The first three were born at Lake Learmouth, the next three at Woorndoo, five were born at Sutherland Plains and the last one was born at Slatey Creek (via St Arnaud).
Alfred worked as a builder and built the Slatey Creek School. In 1889 he moved his family to Mildura by horse and dray, which took 18 days. His daughter Rose kept a diary of that journey (which has been copied for descendents). Two of the children (Hannah & Charles) had married and remained in St Arnaud. The eldest child, Sarah had already moved to Mildura with her husband Charles Trevatt, in 1887. Sarah & Alfred settled in Cureton Avenue, Mildura. Sarah died on 30 April 1909, while on holiday in Melbourne and Alfred died in Mildura on 19 March 1926.

I was trawling the Internet for Trevatt conections and found your page
I am related to the Trevatt family of Charles Trevatt 1844 who married Sarah Anne Appleby 1861.
In fact he would be my 1st Cousin 3 removed.
Our common ancestor was John Trevatt 1784 Pulborough Sussex, and Hester Child, they being my maternal Gr Gr Gr Grandparents.
I think Charles would have been the originator of the "Trevatt Apricot" variety in Mildura - a popular variety that produces large, pale skinned fruit. The orange flesh is firm, juicy & is suitable fresh or for preserving, cooking & stewing.
My ancestor John James Trevatt aged 23 came Apr 1874 on the Carlisle Castle, birth registered Sep 1850 at Guilfford, in the county of Surrey.

See the Trevatt page with notes from Geoff.

Lillian Appleby, actually I think her name was Margaret Lillian would be my great grandmother. I will have to get mums book for this side of the family. She married John Lowrie. They had five children, unless I am mistaken as I have not got all her information in front of me. One son Hubert John married Mary Jane McGauchie and took a soldiers settlers block at Yenda where they raised their family, my mother being one of them.

Thankyou Robyn, Your clue showed me I had missed her death, which clearly names her parents as Alf and Sarah. Sorry I missed her, and thankyou for telling me. E
