Joseph Akers

As far as I can see, this Joseph Akers came aged 21, with his wife Mary Ann aged 18, came Dec 1852 on the James T Foord, with his wife's Spencer family.

From on Saturday, 5 February, 2011

Hi Elizabeth,I chanced upon your site on the Akers, as I was on Google looking for family history in the Connewarre area. My GGgrandfather, John Spencer and his wife Eliza (Tombs) arrived in Vict in Dec 1852 on the James T Foord.
With them they had 4 sons, John (Zachariah), James, William and Edwin and a daughter, Mary Anne, who had married Joseph Akers in Little Rissingtom, Gloucestershire, in August, just before they left for Aust. Joseph was born in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire in 1831, his father being Thomas Akers and his mother Sarah uknown
On the 1851 Census, Joseph's occupation was listed as "servant" John Spencer had a job waiting for him, then later, he bought land at Connewarre. He died in 1858. One of Joseph's daughters, Emma Eliza, married Thomas Akers, a cousin to Joseph's father. He was also born in Brize Norton. but as yet I have not discovered when he came to Aust. Is there a connection between Joseph and Hiram and also Thomas Akers born 1810 in Coventry? I hope you are able to shed some light on this.
Regards, Shirley Mills (Spencer)
Added Sunday, 6 February, 2011,
Thank you for the reply. Joseph was 19 or 20 when he sailed to Aust, depending which month his birthday was. Zachariah was named after the father of John's wife,Eliza Tombs. I found Joseph's family in the 1841 Census. John Spencer's parents were Thomas Spencer 1763 to 1820 and Emma (Amy) Hardiman 1788 to 1865. There were no Sophias in the family as far as I have researched.

We learn the true story of what Hiram endured from his early teens in England when he was sentenced for transportation for various offences in 1841, through his Probationary period in Tasmania, marrying the daughter of one of Tasmania’s earliest settlers, then, following her early death in Melbourne, he was left with a baby in a strange city, but then luckily marrying Thomasine, moving to the goldfields, raising a large family and ending up being publicly recognised as a notable citizen of his town.
Hiram Akers aged 25 wed 5 June 1849 to Elizabeth Medwin aged 18, both made their marks, in the presence of Edwin Medwin and Mary Atkins at St Paul's Church, Stanley, Tasmania. Elizabeth was a daughter of William Medwin and Elizabeth Sarah Cock. On the same day Sarah Medwin aged 16 wed Robert Latimer 34 schoolmaster with John Medwin as witness. Elizabeth's death is recorded in Victoria 1851 #28482 aged 19, buried from Church of England, St Peters Melbourne

Henry later called Hiram Akers wed 13 April 1852 #5930 at St James' Melbourne, to Thomasina Cornish and later lived at Tarnagulla.
Hiram died 20 June 1911 aged 89 at Dunolly Hospital and was buried at Tarnagulla Cemetery. His son William, informant for the Death Certificate, stated he was born in Staffordshire, spent 10 years in Tasmania and 61 years in Victoria. The name of the first wife was not known, her daughter Sophia was aged 64. From the second marriage, three children, Henry, Ann and Albert, were dead, Mary Ann 58, Arthur 53, William 50, Eliza 48 and Selina 46

Thomasina Cornish’s story is equally as interesting, as her mother died when she was only three years old.

The Scotch Immigrants left Leith by a London steamer on 12 Feb and joined the Adelaide on 15th, whence they saied on the folllowing day to take in the Irish immigrants at Plymouth, but owing to the inclemency of the weather the ship did not reach the rendezvous for three weeks, about 7 March 1848 to Melbourne on 22 June 1848. Assisted Migrants - the NSW uthorities paid the Shipping Agent about 19 pounds for each able-bodied worker brought.
