From The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1956) Thursday 24 February 1887
EXPLOSION - 23 Feb 1887
A tragic occurrence took place at Job's Gully, near Eaglehawk, to-day, which resulted in the immediate death of five persons and the serious injury of three others, besides the destruction of a powder factory worth about 3,000. The powder factory was the property of Mr. Joseph Thompson Arblaster, and was only completed about four months ago. In September, 1885, Mr. Arblaster's former powder factory was burned down, and the new premises were erected on the site of the old factory. New and most approved machinery was obtained, and besides renewing the manufacturing of "safety" powder, Mr. Arblaster also entered upon the production of large-grained powder, similar to the grain powder made by Hall and Sons in England.
The factory has given employment to over a dozen persons, a large proportion of whom were boys. Those engaged in the factory were: Mr. Arblaster, owner; Fritz Koenemann, a married man, with a family, who was mnanger, and who formerly owned a powder factory in Ballarat, which was burned down; Alexander Dewar, engine-driver, a man lately married; Frank Westphalen, carpenter, aged 24, single; Philip Meurer, George Wild, Amos Cooper, Arthur Silvester, Maxwell Parker, Robert Straub, and Samuel Arblaster, youths from 14 to 16 years of age, who were employed in various parts of the factory; C. Tolley, the night watchman; and Henry Rodda, 16, the driver of the powder delivery cart. These thirteen were all the hands employed in the factory, and three of them were absent at the time of the explosion, viz., Mr. Arblaster, who is at present visiting Sydney; Henry Rodda, who was away with the powder cart; and C. Tolley, who was not on duty at the time.
Of the remaining 10 five have been killed, viz., Maxwell Parker, who is the son of the landlord of the Miners' Arms Hotel, Eaglehawk; Samuel Arblaster, son of the proprietor of the factory; Robert Straub, Arthur Silvester, and Frank Westphalen.
